FPY is stricter than a simple scrap rate — a reworked-and-passed unit still counts against FPY, since it wasn’t right the first time. It feeds directly into OEE’s Quality component.

How the calculation works

First Pass Yield (FPY) = units passing inspection without rework ÷ total units started, expressed as a percentage. The key word is “without rework” — a unit that failed inspection, got reworked, and passed the second time still counts against FPY.

That’s what makes FPY stricter and more honest than a plain scrap rate, which only counts units that were rejected outright. A process can have near-zero scrap and still have a real quality problem if a large share of units need a second pass to pass at all — rework hides in labor and cycle time, not in a scrap bin.

FPY is the more rigorous read on the Quality component behind OEE: OEE’s Quality figure (good parts ÷ total parts) should be defined the same “right first time” way FPY is, not loosened to include reworked units.
