This is a plant-floor-time metric, not an OEE component — it tells you how much of the machine’s total possible time was actually spent producing, independent of whether the rest was planned downtime, changeovers, or simply unscheduled hours.

How the calculation works

Machine utilization= actual production time ÷ total available time. “Total available time” means the full calendar or scheduled plant time for the period — every hour the machine could physically have run, whether or not production was ever planned for it.

This is the key distinction from OEE’s Availability component, which divides run time by planned production timeinstead — a smaller, already curated denominator that excludes hours nobody intended to run. Two machines with identical Availability scores can have very different utilization if one is scheduled for two shifts and the other for three: utilization captures the opportunity a schedule is leaving on the table, Availability doesn’t see it at all.

A low utilization number isn’t automatically a problem — it might mean the machine simply isn’t scheduled for more hours. It becomes a real signal when it’s compared against demand: idle capacity you didn’t know you had, or a machine that’s already maxed out and can’t absorb more work without a second shift.
