Cycle time is the actual, measured pace — how long the line really takes per unit, stops and all. Compare it against your takt time to see whether that pace is fast enough to meet demand.

How the calculation works

Cycle time = total production time ÷ number of units produced in that time. It is the real, observed pace — it already includes every micro-stop, speed loss, and minor interruption that happened during the run, not a theoretical best case.

Cycle time only means something next to a target. Set beside takt time — the pace demand requires — it tells you immediately whether a line is keeping up, running with slack, or falling behind, without needing a separate diagnosis.

It also feeds directly into capacity: swap the ideal cycle time in a capacity calculation for this actual, measured figure and you get a realistic ceiling on output instead of an optimistic one.

This calculator uses one average figure for a single run. ThingConnect measures cycle time continuously, part by part, directly from controller data — so a creeping cycle time shows up as a trend long before it shows up in a monthly report.
