Takt time calculator
The pace you need to produce at to meet demand — not how fast you actually run.
Takt time is the pace required to meet demand, not a measured speed — it comes entirely from the schedule and the order book. Compare it against your actual cycle time to see whether you’re running faster or slower than the customer needs.
How the calculation works
Takt time= net available production time ÷ customer demand for that period. “Takt” is German for pace or rhythm — the number answers “how often does a unit need to come off the line to keep up with orders,” not “how fast can the machine go.”
Takt time is a target, derived entirely from demand and schedule — it says nothing about what the machine or line can actually deliver. That’s the job of cycle time, the measured, actual pace per unit. Line up the two:
- Cycle time longer than takt time — you’re falling behind demand.
- Cycle time shorter than takt time — you have slack, or you’re over-producing.
- Cycle time close to takt time — the line is paced correctly.
This calculator is for a single line over a single period. ThingConnect tracks actual cycle time continuously from controller data, so the takt-vs-cycle comparison stays current as demand or staffing changes — not a one-time spreadsheet calculation that goes stale the next time the order book shifts.
