How the calculation works
Production rate= units produced ÷ time elapsed, typically expressed as units per hour. It’s effectively the inverse of cycle time (minutes per unit) — the same underlying measurement, just framed as a throughput number instead of a per-unit duration.
Which framing to use is mostly about audience: a scheduler planning capacity thinks in units/hour, an engineer tuning a process thinks in seconds or minutes/unit. Both numbers come from the same data and convert directly into each other.
Set against takt time or a capacity figure, production rate tells you immediately whether current output is keeping pace with demand or with the line’s own ceiling.
